Want to know how to make a whisk tea light candle holder? Here’s a fun DIY idea that will take you less than 5 minutes to put together, for maximum visual impact! I made these DIY whisk tea light candle holder votives in collaboration with HelloSociety, as party or wedding inspiration, to celebrate the release of The Hundred Foot Journey movie, and to promote the film all across Pinterest! Not surprisingly, this little project was a huge hit, being the most pinned, most re-pinned, most liked, and most clicked-on pin for any campaign so far!
It was such a fun project to make and photograph, so I really hope you like it, too. I had an absolute blast with this photoshoot (and you wouldn’t know it but I was actually making, styling and photographing this whole project while I was still on vacation in Indonesia!). We hung these beautiful votives from the doorway of my mother-in-law’s house in a rural Central Javanese village.
This is what you’ll need:
- More than 3 metal whisks (I used 5, they don’t all have to match)
- Fishing line (to tie up the whisks)
- Ribbon in your color scheme (for simple decoration)
- 3M Command ceiling hooks (in case you don’t have anything to hang your votives from)
- Tealight candles (can substitute with battery tealight candles, if used around children or if fire hazard is a concern).
Here’s what to do:
First, cut your colored ribbon into lengths, and then tie in a bow around the handle of each of your whisks. Cut off lengths of fishing line, then tie your fishing line to each whisk handle. Tie a loop at the top of each line, to hang on your ceiling hooks (or elsewhere). Stick up your ceiling hooks if needed (keeping away from walls or curtains if using real tealight candles to avoid a fire hazard), then hang your votives. If you are using battery tealight candles, you can hang these anywhere! Insert your candles carefully between the whisk wires, make sure they are sitting horizontally in the base of the wire “nest”, and then light ’em up! Viola!
You can’t get a better dollar store craft than this! And the real beauty of this idea is that you can give the whisk votives away to guests at the end of the evening, as a keepsake souvenir that they’ll actually use in the kitchen all the time! I gave my whisks out to all my mother-in-law’s neighbours in the village, after the candles ran out of wick.
Your whisks don’t all have to be the same size or shape to make an effective display, but they should all be metal, because plastic whisks could melt if you are not using battery tealights.
The whisks look best when grouped in odd numbers, for example, three, five, or seven.
